Since it reflects a general shift from linguistic and formal translation theories to a more functionally and socio-culturally oriented concept of translation, it has become "a welcome addition to translation studies" (Gentzler 2001:71). In her response to the first few chapters of Toury's book Descriptive Translation Studies – And Beyond, in which he calls for a systematic study of the newly emerging discipline, Ebru provides a nice overview of the developments in descriptive translation studies. The formulation of questions is an important aspect of any research programme, and it has been the basis for descriptive- explanatory research as well.
